As we wind down to the end of the year, it’s a time when we all start thinking about resolutions.

Resolutions are frequently made but unfortunately, not frequently kept. In fact, according to Inc. 60% of Americans will make New Year’s resolutions, but only 8% will keep them.

We often think of what things we want to change but we don’t often give a lot of thought on why we want to make that change or how go about doing it. Let us take for example, weight loss.  Many people want to lose weight and make this resolution each and every New Year. If this is on your list for 2021, take some time to think about why you want to lose weight.

START WITH WHY
Everyone wants to look good, but that is often not enough motivation to actually lose weight and keep it off. We tend to make the “I want to lose a few pounds” resolution lightly but this year, maybe try to shift your perspective so that you are looking to live a healthier lifestyle.  Focus on the fact that you want to feel better, or have more energy or live longer and the weight loss will be a bi-product. This is much better than facing an impossible diet and workout schedule so that when we fall off the wagon (and we all do at some point), we get discouraged just stop trying.

MOVE TO HOW
With the goal of being healthier as our perspective, the following thoughts will put you on the road to how:

  • Try to learn at least one new thing everyday
  • Get moving! It doesn’t matter what you do, just make sure you keep moving.
  • Take a walk around the block at lunch for the fresh air and Vitamin D
  • Increase your water intake throughout the day to flush your system and stay hydrated
  • Read more and have less screen time
  • Eat at home more often so you can control your portions
  • Make sure you get a good night’s sleep

Most Importantly!  If you fall off the wagon, get back on.  Don’t let one bad day ruin your progress or perspective!
